What’s the Story?
Ever since he relocated to Arizona, George Renda’s life has been very good. The retired New York City Police Detective usually had a leisurely breakfast on the poolside lanai behind his ranch house. Afterward, George would spend the rest of the warm, sunny days either playing golf, riding his horse along the winding trails in the scenic foothills or cruising the lake on his fishing boat. And, when the beautiful sunsets brought an end to his activities, the evenings George shared with Lena Morgan were even more enjoyable. From the moment he met Lena, George was captivated. And before long, the affable city boy and the attractive, spirited country girl fell effortlessly into an exhilarating romantic relationship.
In fact, his life was so perfect, George didn’t even mind it when Lena occasionally complained that he neglected to do his share of the chores that the small ranch required. Although he wasn’t quite sure why she had such a silly notion in her head.
Nevertheless, George’s routine continued for almost a year before it came to an abrupt ending.
When he learns that the police back home were unable to find out who murdered his close friend’s son, George feels compelled to help. He ignores Lena’s objections, returns to Brooklyn and devises an unorthodox plan. With a little help from a newspaper reporter, a street hustler he recruits and his former partner, George manages to capture the killer.
However, solving the case does not produce the typical happy ending. When the Police interrogate the killer, he confesses to being a professional hit man who works for a nationwide murder for hire organization that is managed by people who keep their identities concealed from their employees and clients.
The stunning realization that he has inadvertently interfered with the Association’s business convinces George that retaliation against everyone involved is imminent. He desperately tries to find some way to protect his friends, but circumstances quickly go from bad to worse.
Suddenly, Lena appears in the city. She is furious that George has gotten himself into such a horrendous situation. But nevertheless, she is ready, willing and able to help him destroy the stealth enemy.
